Independent thinking - for the future of Jersey

Elect Jersey 2005 was formed in May 2005 when a group of people from diverse backgrounds began sharing their concerns about the future of political representation in Jersey. In particular, we were concerned about the risks to future prosperity posed by decreasing standards of public behaviour by some States members, a decline in the quality of debate and decision-making and the re-emergence of party politics.

After testing the views of a larger invited gathering in June 2005, the two founding members of the group, Alex Ohlsson and Matthew Robins, resolved to campaign for the continuation of representation by talented, independent States members bringing intellect, wisdom and diverse views to the Chamber. The kind of representation that has led Jersey through decades of continuous prosperity since the end of the second world war.

"We can't afford to get it wrong"

Very important challenges face Jersey in the next three years, and they need to be addressed under the leadership of Jersey's new form of ministerial government. This web site aims to help Jersey's electorate to make well-informed decisions about whom to select from the large number of candidates in this autumn's vital elections. We can't afford to get it wrong! If there's anything missing that you would like to see included in the site, please contact us and let us know.

Campaign funding

In order to help quash misguided speculation about our role in the campaigns of individual candidates, we are happy to confirm that we have to date provided no funding to individual candidates, nor will we do so at any time before or after the 2005 elections. The support we provide is strictly in the form of expert technical advice on request, with the aim of helping independent candidates formulate informed policies, and promotional support to all independent candidates through the information we provide in this site. This support is open to all independent candidates.
