A history of party politics

Party politics are not new to Jersey. This page will shortly contain a condensed history of party politics in Jersey, based on 'The Triumph of the Country' by Advocate John Kelleher.

It's a story of deeply adversarial politics based on cults of personality. Writing about the Rose and Laurel parties of the early 19th century, Advocate Kelleher describes 'fiercely contested elections and parishes divided to the extent of each party having a separate tavern, as in St Martin with The Rose and The Crown one either side of the parish church.'

It would be good to have some electoral excitement, but parishes divided... perhaps not.

More to come!
